Q about microbiology lab?

Joe Gram-stained an 18-hours culture of E coli, but he used the acid alcohol decolorizer from the acid-fast stain set instead of the ethanol in the Gram stain set. Although he reported E coli to be Gram-negative, his lab instructor told him to run it again and use the correct decolorizer. Why?
